"I love a cappella. That said, this is one of the first a cappella albums that I’ve heard which combines originals and covers. Usually they are covers of others' work. The good news here is that the originals here are pretty damn good. I am in love and partial to the cover of Michael McDonald’s “Takin’ it To the Streets.” I also fell in love with “Sleep On” and “So Easy,” which seemed to pull away from traditional Doo Wop a cappella and seemed a bit more modern." -Michael Mardings, TheCelebrityCafe.com

Our Price: $15.00

True to its name, "By Request" features audience favorites from Tonic Sol-fa's illustrious career. In fact, three of the songs on this album were featured on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion radio show in September 2004. But these aren't just re-masters of old tunes - some of these are redone and given new life by these great-sounding guys from Minnesota. The album opens with a wicked groovy "29 Ways to My Baby's Door" - we dare you to sit still for that one! Bright, poppy "Cecilia" just makes you feel good all over; new original "Chances" is reminiscent of a great Don Henley ballad; country gets a solid nod with a great "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident") - this is one of the best covers

This is our most overlooked cd. Since the only cover on here is of Elvis' "A Little Less Conversation", it is somewhat understandable that the lack of song title recognition is cause for people to not give the attention it deserves. However, if someone were to give the cd a listen, they would discover a deeper look into Tonic Sol-fa's amazing original works. Hear raw and unrefined versions of "Sleep On" and "Boston to Beijing", prior to release on the national album. Listen to the versatility of the group, as they maneuver through genres with the pop sounds of "Virginia" and "Take Me Away", to the country-radio-ready "Sweet Time", to the wonderfully written ballads "Apartment 204", "Long, Lonely, While", and "Who Will Love Me". If you've gone without this cd for fear of unfamiliarity, treat yourself to the group's best-kept secret, "Red Vinyl".

Although this was the first album as the current line-up, this 2001 release sounds as though Tonic Sol-fa has already been together for years. The cover songs are masterfully arranged, and the original tunes are done well. Style starts with the light, pop sound of "Na, Na, Na", then onto the doo-wop feel of "Love You Forever", both originals. The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" is made for acappella. "The Road", another original, could (and should) be the mandatory graduation song across the country. "Man Of Constant Sorrow", from the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack gives the Soggy Bottom Boys a run for their money, and "Witchy Woman" would make Don Henley smile. "Ready-Made" has a nice, strong, booming bass lead, and while "Go Tell It On The Mountain" is traditionally considered a Christmas tune, the latin-feel makes the song's presence on this album far from
Sugarue
Sugarüe
Our Price: $15.00

The hard working Contemporary male quartet Tonic Sol Fa brings us an envelope-pushing Christmas CD, "Sugarue." They took eight traditional carols, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Joy to the World," "Joseph's Song," "I Saw Three Ships," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "The First Noel," "Silent Night," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "The Little Drummer Boy," and added strong vocal percussion, jazzy arrangements and their own blend of butter-smooth harmonies. To this they added a pair of original Christmas songs, "Joseph's Song" and "Sno" written by group member Shaun Johnson. The result is as fresh as a new-fallen snow-but let there be no mistake, the feeling and love that is at the heart of all these carols is still abundantly there. Sugarue is a treat, and it has our early vote for best Christmas CD of the year!
